The Wesleyan Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) was created to provide support for survivors of sexual violence.
SART members will support and assist any Wesleyan student who is a survivor of a sexual assault, acquaintance rape, stranger rape or other form of sexual violence. SART members are expected to provide a supportive environment, listen fully to the student’s concerns and provide appropriate referrals. They are NOT expected to act as therapists for the students who seek out their help, unless this is their primary position within the University.
SART members will be available during their regular working hours, typically Monday through Friday during the day. SART members are NOT trained or expected to provide 24 hour crisis assistance. SART members who serve in an on-call capacity as part of the normal responsibilities of their position are the only exception. 24 hour services are available through the Office of Behavioral Health for Students (therapist on call) and the Women and Families Center in Middletown.
The supportive function of a SART member includes helping survivors by explaining options for medical care, mental health care, housing, academic concerns and how to file a report with the University. During the process of assisting a survivor, it is critical to keep the needs of the student in mind above all else. Allow the survivor to maintain control over the decision making process as options are presented.
In addition, SART members:
- May be asked to provide referrals for medical care and counseling follow-up.
- May act as a liaison in helping a student obtain alternative housing arrangements through the Office of Residence Life
- May be asked to contact other offices, such as the class dean or faculty member, on the student’s behalf to discuss alternative academic arrangements should the survivor desire this.
- May assist survivors in filing a confidential crime report or formal University report with Public Safety.
SART members will respect the privacy and confidentiality of the students they work with. It is in the best interest of the student to keep the number of people involved to a minimum. In instances where it is necessary to discuss the survivor’s situation with other members of the University community, the SART member will seek the student’s prior consent. The student’s name is not to be shared unless deemed necessary.
Protected SART Members
Health professionals and clergy are protected by laws and professional standards which allow them to keep the information you share with them from being shared with any other office within the University unless they deem you or someone else to be in imminent danger of harm. As a result, these SART members are not required to submit any type of report form as a result of their contact with a student. They may choose to file a confidential crime report (without any personally identifiable information) for statistical purposes only.

SART Members
The SART members listed below have been trained to provide support to survivors of sexual assault but do not have the same professional and legal protections as those listed above. If you seek their support and have not come to a decision about pursuing judicial action within the University, you should only share general information about the incident. If you provide information that identifies an alleged assailant and/or the location of the assault, they may be compelled to pass on the information to the judicial board for adjudication.
